Visas and Residence Permits

Any citizen from non-European Union countries who wishes to reside in Portugal must obtain a visa that allows them to legally enter the country. Once in national territory, the individual must apply for a residence permit, which will allow them to live and work in Portugal, as well as move freely within the Schengen area. Additionally, these rights can be extended to family members.

Given the variety of visas and residence permits, PARES has accumulated vast experience over the years in advising its clients on identifying the most suitable visa and/or residence permit, as well as assisting throughout the entire application process until its completion.

PARES has a team of experienced lawyers with recognized expertise, particularly in matters of permanent residence permits and Portuguese citizenship, since Portuguese law establishes that any individual holding a temporary residence permit in Portugal for at least five years is entitled to obtain a permanent residence permit and may simultaneously apply for Portuguese citizenship.

Citizenship

Due to having one of the best passports in the world, with easy entry and access to the vast majority of other countries, as well as unique residency conditions, there has been an increase in foreign citizens seeking Portuguese citizenship. These applicants may be descendants of Portuguese nationals, married to Portuguese citizens, or eligible through the Golden Visa program or other types of residence permits held for more than five years.

PARES has also assisted its clients on this matter throughout the entire process of granting/acquiring of Portuguese citizenship, from the preliminary stage of analyzing and submitting the application, to monitoring it through to its conclusion and issuance of Portuguese identification document (citizen card/passport) after registration with the Portuguese civil registry.
